I've never been one to get into the weeds of all the different genres of electronic music. At the end of the day, I either like something or I don't. This four track EP from Chloe provides a reminder of my formative years, standing in clubs and feeling that thump of sound rise up through the floor and plant itself squarely in my chest.

The EP opens with "Redux", which doesn't start in what I'd call a conventional fashion, but it soon settles into a driving bass line and relentless pulse, hallmarks for this style of music. There's a welcome break close to the halfway mark that offers a brief moment of respite while still maintaining the track's hypnotic energy, before it returns to its forward momentum.

"Tokyo" immediately asserts itself with a deep, throbbing bass while adding a softer layer that complements it nicely. Admittedly, there are no hidden depths here. This is an unapologetic call to the dance floor, or for those of us happy to leave those days behind, a call to headphones and the comfort of being cocooned in a capsule of immersive sound.

"Shift" has a later-night feel to it. It's more about unwinding than gearing up for release. Again, there's a break shortly after the two-minute mark where the bass eases off and gives way to a quirky lightness before returning, this time bringing that playful quality more fully into the mix. Around the four minute mark, the track shifts again, becoming more bass-focused while wispy synth textures swirl in and out around it.

The EP closes with "Hush", introducing vocal snippets before giving way to a rich, pulsing low end. The synth work and vocal effects remind me a little of The Orb, with the track heading in a more ambient direction, something I'm completely on board with.

I often say that releases like this can be difficult to review on a track-by-track basis, but with only four tracks and enough substance to dig into, I think a closer examination is justified. Overall, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're craving the atmosphere of a club long after closing time, or simply enjoy losing yourself in a good pair of headphones, this is an EP well worth your time.
