Liza Lo—Familiar

I’ve often been asked to quantify what makes a great song, and honestly, it’s near impossible. Every time I try, I end up contradicting myself. But somehow, when I hear something that hits, I just know. It clicks.
That’s exactly what happened as soon as this album began. The voice, rich, emotive, sultry, drew me in instantly. It invited me to stay, to listen. So I did, with high expectations.
The journey begins with Gipsy Hill, a light acoustic opener that gradually builds with beautifully layered orchestration. I’m a sucker for a string section, especially when it’s this well-placed. It complements Liza’s expressive voice perfectly.
In Morning Call, I hear echoes of Suzanne Vega, not just in the pacing or storytelling, but in the mood. Still, the vocals are the real centerpiece here, pulling everything else into orbit.
Darling shifts into something more intimate. It’s the sound of an artist holding a roomful of people captive in a small café. And just when you’ve settled into it, it’s over, ending with a suddenness that lingers.
Catch The Door didn’t quite land for me. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it felt a little out of step with the rest of the album. Or maybe it just didn’t connect with me personally.
As A Messenger begins, a cello sets the tone and immediately I’m reminded of Nick Drake. But instead of haunting loneliness, Liza’s voice fills the space with passion and longing. That feeling carries over into As I Listen, not just in the sound but in the way the two tracks flow together.
Open Eyes and Anything Like Love continue the journey in stride, while What I Used To Do brings a slightly more upbeat twist, adding a bit of lightness to the mix.
Then comes Confiarme, a soulful detour sung in Spanish. The title means "Trust Me". I’m not averse to non-English tracks, but this one didn’t quite gel for me. Not because of the language, but perhaps because it interrupted the emotional rhythm the earlier tracks had built.
The album closes with Show Me, a dark, brooding piece that serves as a powerful and fitting conclusion.
This is one of those albums that needs to be experienced as a whole. While each track can hold its own, it’s when they’re listened to in sequence that the full story reveals itself.
