Gnod—Chronicles of Gnowt (Vol 1)

It's funny, the album opened with "Threes Tree's, Pt 1", and all I was getting was guitar in my left ear. "Hey what about me?", I mused my right ear crying, and then he was quickly sated. I love the simplicity of this track, as the guitars seem to serenade each side of my brain. It's like the calm before the storm, and anticipation is high as the track is taken over by more ominous sounds.
"Shadow Mirror" has a more repetitive sound, with hints of psychedelia, but never quite tripping the groove. It sits in the more rhythmic space of Gong or Soft Machine than anything more experimental. Vocals come in around the two-minute mark and are suitably brief, and to some degree unintelligible, a bit like The Fall, but less exaggerated, though perhaps that’s just my ears.
Less song, more rhythmic soundscape, "Neptune" is a little on the darker side, and maybe for me, less aesthetically pleasing. I think many years ago, I would have had more time for this, but now, it feels more of a struggle to casually listen to.
A continuation of "Pt 1", "Three Trees, Pt 2" is more my cup of tea, as it feels less combative to listen to, allowing you to settle into it more easily and go with the flow. There’s a greater sense of space here, and it invites you to get a bit lost in the moment rather than being pushed or pulled by the arrangement. With headphones on, the detail really opens up, and you can more fully immerse yourself in the textures and subtle shifts within the soundscape being created.
The mood shifts dramatically with "All Tunnel No Light". At first I thought it was descending into much, much darker themes, with the dark, crashing opening, but it then lifts a little. It's still much darker, but not as oppressively so. Like "Shadow Mirror", this is again a more repetitive work, that is maybe less geared to a casual listen and more another stop along the journey of the album.
The album closes with the longest song on this six track album, "Ekstatis", running at just over 10 minutes. I think it's more in keeping with the prior track and for more hardened followers of this style of music. It has those hints of repetition that I enjoy, but the much darker sound makes it harder for me to chill out to and enjoy.
Overall, an interesting album with some definite highlights. For me it’s very much two sides of a coin, heads being more chilled and easy-going, tails being more angst and darkness. At the moment I find I need more heads, though I can still appreciate the tails, and I’m sure there are many listeners who will take the coin as a whole and enjoy both sides equally.
